How Much Mulch for a Playground?
Size the use zone, not just the equipment. A 10 ft × 10 ft play structure with the 6-foot use zone required around it measures 22 ft × 22 ft — 484 sq ft. At the 6-inch minimum recommended for shredded or recycled rubber that is about 242 cubic feet, or 9 cubic yards. At 9 inches it is about 13.4 cubic yards.
Use zone side = equipment side + 2 × 6 ft. Volume (cu ft) = net area × depth in inches ÷ 12.

The use zone measures 22 ft × 22 ft = 484 sq ft. At 6 inches that is 484 × 6 ÷ 12 = 242 cubic feet = 8.96 cubic yards. In 0.8 cu ft bags that would be 303 bags.
What the CPSC handbook actually says
The Consumer Product Safety Commission's Public Playground Safety Handbook (Publication 325) is the document most US playground guidance points back to. In the sections on loose-fill surfacing it states, in its installation tips for loose-fill materials:
- Shredded or recycled rubber mulch is listed under "Appropriate Surfacing," provided the product meets ASTM F1292 impact attenuation testing.
- "Never use less than 9 inches of loose-fill material except for shredded/recycled rubber (6 inches recommended). Shallow depths are too easily displaced and compacted."
- Its Table 2 lists 9 inches of shredded/recycled rubber as protecting to a fall height of 10 feet.
- Loose-fill materials compress at least 25% over time, so the initial fill is set higher than the target depth. The handbook notes that shredded rubber does not compress in the same manner, but that displacement can still occur.
- Manufacturers of engineered wood fiber and rubber mulch should provide critical height data based on ASTM F1292, minimum fill-depth data, and toxicity data for their product.
Two practical consequences follow. First, only products sold and tested as playground surfacing should be used as playground surfacing — landscaping mulch and playground-rated rubber are not interchangeable. Second, the depth you order has to be the depth the product's own test data supports for your equipment's fall height, not a generic gardening figure.
Step 1: measure the use zone, not the footprint
The use zone is the surface under and around equipment where a child would be expected to land. For stand-alone climbers, rotating equipment, and seesaws the handbook's rule is the same: the use zone extends a minimum of 6 feet in all directions from the perimeter of the equipment.
That means a 10 ft × 10 ft structure needs a 22 ft × 22 ft surface, not 100 sq ft of surface. Missing the apron is the most common way a playground order comes out short — the equipment footprint is 100 sq ft while the actual surface area is 484 sq ft.
Some equipment has its own larger or shaped use zone. Slides have exit-zone rules, swings have front-and-back rules, and composite structures have their own section. Check the specific equipment section of the handbook before finalizing an order.
Step 2: pick the depth from the fall height
Depth is a function of how high a child can fall, not of how the surface looks. Rubber is the only loose-fill material the handbook exempts from the 9-inch floor, and it still needs a documented critical height for your equipment.

Step 3: turn the area and depth into yards
Once the use zone area and depth are set, the arithmetic is the same as any mulch order: area × depth ÷ 12 = cubic feet, and cubic feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards.

Why playgrounds are usually bought in bulk, not bags
Rubber mulch is commonly sold in 0.8 cubic foot bags — for example the NuScape 0.8 cu ft rubber mulch bag and the Rubberific 0.8 cu ft shredded rubber mulch bag. At 6 inches deep, one 0.8 cu ft bag covers only 1.6 sq ft. A 484 sq ft use zone would need about 303 of those bags.
That is the reality check on bag shopping for a playground: bagged rubber makes sense for a small tree ring or a single post, but a real use zone is a bulk purchase measured in cubic yards. The calculator above reports both units so you can see the crossover before you commit.
Order more than the target depth for compressible materials
The handbook warns that loose-fill surfaces compress at least 25% over time from use and weather, and gives the example that a required 9 inches of wood chips means an initial fill of about 12 inches. If you install exactly the target depth on day one, the surface drops below the tested depth. Shredded rubber is treated differently in the handbook, but displacement and material loss still occur, so plan for topping up.
Playground surfacing mistakes to avoid
- Ordering for the equipment footprint instead of the use zone — the difference is the 6-foot apron on every side.
- Using landscaping mulch or rubber nuggets that were never tested to ASTM F1292 as playground surfacing.
- Installing exactly the target depth on compressible loose-fill and expecting it to stay there.
- Treating "6 inches" as a universal playground depth. It comes from the rubber-specific allowance, and it still depends on the product's own critical-height data.
- Forgetting that slides, swings, and composite structures can have their own use zone rules.
