How Many Bags of Mulch in a Yard?

One cubic yard of mulch is 27 cubic feet, so it equals 18 bags at 1.5 cu ft, 14 bags at 2 cu ft, or 9 bags at 3 cu ft. The 2 cu ft count rounds up because 27 ÷ 2 = 13.5, and stores sell whole bags.

Formula: cubic yards × 27 = cubic feet. Then divide by the cubic feet printed on the bag.

Why the same yard can mean different bag counts

The word "yard" is the bulk volume unit. The bag count depends on the bag label, not on the color, brand, or whether the mulch is wood, bark, rubber, or coco chips. A 2 cu ft bag is common, but it is not the only size on the shelf.

If a store page shows a 1.5 cu ft bag, a yard is 18 bags exactly. If it shows a 2 cu ft bag, a yard is 13.5 bags, so the shopping number is 14. If it shows a 3 cu ft bag, a yard is 9 bags exactly.

The small overbuy that happens with 2 cu ft bags

Fourteen 2 cu ft bags give you 28 cubic feet. That is one cubic foot more than a cubic yard. On a 3-inch layer, that leftover cubic foot covers 4 square feet, so it is enough to touch up a narrow strip, not a second bed.

Do not compare bags by price alone

A cheaper bag can still cost more per cubic foot if it is smaller. Divide the price by the bag volume first. In the dated snapshot above, a $3.47 bag at 1.5 cu ft is $2.31 per cu ft, while a $3.33 bag at 2 cu ft is $1.67 per cu ft before taxes, rebates, delivery charges, or local fees.

When to use this page instead of the full calculator

Use this page when you already know the bulk amount is one cubic yard and you only need the bag count. If you still need to measure a bed, use the Mulch Calculator first, then come back here if you want to translate cubic yards into bagged mulch.
