Three numbers to compare before checkout
- Measured area: include only the soil that will receive mulch.
- Planned depth: keep it in inches for this calculation.
- Bag volume: copy the cubic-foot value printed on the specific product label; do not assume one standard bag size.
The calculation is required cubic feet = area × depth ÷ 12. Then bags required = ceiling(required cubic feet ÷ bag volume). One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, so the same result can also be shown in cubic yards.
Why a bag-label check helps
Two bags can look similar while listing different volumes. A cart can also be short by a fraction of a bag even when its rounded total seems close. The optional cart field makes the gap visible in cubic feet and whole bags without assuming anything about a retailer’s catalog, delivery rules, or availability.

Worked example
A 120 sq ft bed at 3 inches needs 120 × 3 ÷ 12 = 30 cubic feet, which is 1.11 cubic yards. If the selected bags each state 2 cubic feet, the exact division is 15 bags. If a cart contains 14 of those bags, it is short by 2 cubic feet, or one bag at that label size.
Common mix-ups
- Using an outside rectangle without removing paths, patios, or other uncovered surfaces.
- Confusing a bag’s weight with its cubic-foot volume.
- Using a bag size remembered from a different product instead of reading the current label.
- Rounding a fractional bag down rather than up.
