How Much Mulch Do I Need?

The formula uses square feet, inches, and cubic yards. A supplier’s ordering increment is separate from the exact calculation.
The direct answer
Measure the area that will actually receive mulch, select the layer depth for the project, then calculate area × depth ÷ 324. The answer is cubic yards. The 324 comes from 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard multiplied by 12 inches in one foot.

- For a rectangle, multiply length by width to get square feet.
- For a circle, use π × (diameter ÷ 2)².
- Remove any surface that will not receive mulch before calculating volume.

A cubic-yard quote can be translated back into an installed depth over your measured area: depth in inches = quoted cubic yards × 324 ÷ area. The calculator above shows both directions. It separates the math from a seller’s minimum order or delivery increment.

Worked check
If a bed is 120 sq ft and the planned depth is 3 inches, the required volume is 120 × 3 ÷ 324 = 1.11 cubic yards. If a quote lists 1.5 cubic yards, the reverse check is 1.5 × 324 ÷ 120 = 4.05 inches. These formulas report volume and depth; they do not decide whether to change a supplier’s quoted quantity.
Common ordering mistakes
- Calculating from an outside rectangle without subtracting unmulched paths, trunks, or islands.
- Using a depth in inches as though it were feet; the ÷324 shortcut is for square feet, inches, and cubic yards.
- Comparing a cubic-yard quote with bag count without converting units.
- Rounding small sections before adding the total. Add areas or volumes first, then apply a supplier’s ordering rule once.
