MEASURE ONCE · CHECK BEFORE ORDERING

How to Figure Out How Much Mulch You Need

Measure the area that will actually receive mulch, multiply by your chosen depth, then convert the volume into the seller’s unit. For square feet and inches: cubic yards = area × depth ÷ 324. Use the check below to keep the three order numbers—area, depth, and seller unit—separate.

START WITH A NET AREA

Enter the area you will cover and the depth you selected

The calculator reports exact cubic feet and cubic yards. If you enter the exact volume printed on a bag or unit, it also rounds the required quantity up to whole units.

The five-minute measure-to-order method

  1. Sketch the bed. Draw the outer boundary and mark every place that will stay uncovered.
  2. Measure each coverable piece. Use length × width for rectangles; use π × (diameter ÷ 2)² for circles.
  3. Make one net area. Add coverable pieces and subtract patios, paths, tree openings, or islands that will not get mulch.
  4. Choose and record a depth. Keep it in inches for the ÷324 shortcut.
  5. Convert only at the end. First get cubic yards or cubic feet; then use the exact seller unit printed on the bag or quote.

Worked example

For 120 sq ft at 3 inches, calculate 120 × 3 ÷ 324 = 1.11 cubic yards. The same volume is 120 × 3 ÷ 12 = 30 cubic feet. If a chosen bag states 2 cubic feet, divide 30 by 2: the order is 15 bags. The bag size belongs to the chosen product, so use its label instead of assuming a size.

FAQ

How do I figure out mulch for a circle?

Find its area first: π × (diameter ÷ 2)². Use the area result in the calculator above, or select Circle on the main calculator.

Should I calculate in bags or cubic yards first?

Calculate volume first. Bags and bulk cubic yards are two ways a seller may package the same volume.
