Bale coverage depends on the product and the depth named by that seller. This calculator deliberately does not assume a universal square-foot figure.
Why this calculator asks for your bale’s coverage
Pine straw is often sold as compressed bales or rolls, so a bale count is not a universal volume conversion. Sellers can publish different coverage figures at different depths. Enter the figure that applies to the exact product and depth you plan to use; then the math is traceable: net area ÷ seller coverage = exact bales.
Do not borrow a coverage number from a different seller’s calculator. A number is only useful when it describes the bale or roll you are actually buying and the depth at which that seller states it.
Measure net area before counting bales
For a rectangular bed, outside area is length × width. If a circular tree base, pot, path island, or other spot will not receive pine straw, subtract π × (diameter ÷ 2)². The result is the net area to cover. The calculator above does that subtraction before it divides by the bale coverage you provide.
Whole-bale check
After calculating the exact count, whole bales are necessary because sellers do not normally split them. This page shows both values: the exact calculation and the final whole-bale count. It also shows the square footage represented by those whole bales and the difference from your net area. That difference is coverage capacity at the seller’s stated rate, not a recommendation to spread at a different depth.
Worked method without a fixed bale assumption
Suppose a bed measures 20 ft × 10 ft and you leave a 2 ft-diameter circle bare. Net area is 200 − 3.14 = 196.86 sq ft. If the seller’s label says one bale covers C sq ft at your chosen depth, the exact bale count is 196.86 ÷ C. Enter that C value into the calculator; do not replace it with a generic rate.
Common pine straw ordering mistakes
- Counting the full outside rectangle even though an island, path, pot, or tree base stays uncovered.
- Using a supplier’s coverage figure without checking the depth attached to that figure.
- Rounding each bed separately instead of adding net areas and rounding one final total.
- Treating a bale’s compressed dimensions as installed coverage. Use the seller’s installed-coverage specification instead.

How do I find the coverage number for a bale?
Use the coverage specification on the product page, product label, or seller quote for the exact bale or roll and stated depth. If it is not provided, this calculator cannot truthfully infer it from bale dimensions alone.
Can I use this for a pine straw refresh?
Yes—enter the coverage figure that the seller associates with the depth you intend for that refresh. The calculator only converts your measured net area into bales; it does not prescribe a depth.
