Rubber mulch bags are not all the same size — 0.8, 1.25 and 1.5 cubic feet are all on sale — so the bag count depends entirely on which bag you buy. At a 2-inch layer, a 0.8 cu ft bag covers 4.8 sq ft and a 1.5 cu ft bag covers 9 sq ft. A 200 sq ft bed at 2 inches needs 33.3 cubic feet: about 42 bags at 0.8 cu ft, or 23 bags at 1.5 cu ft.

200 sq ft at 2 inches is 33.33 cubic feet, or 1.23 cubic yards. Divided by 0.8 cubic feet per bag that is 41.7 bags, rounded up to 42 whole bags.

Why bag counts go wrong on rubber mulch

Wood mulch is usually sold in one or two familiar bag sizes, so people learn a rule of thumb and reuse it. Rubber is different. Real products on the market right now include an 0.8 cubic foot nugget bag (NuScape NS8), a 1.25 cubic foot bag, and 1.5 cubic foot bags that a manufacturer sells fifty to a pallet for 75 cubic feet.

That is a difference of nearly two to one between the smallest and largest bag. Applying a "one bag per X square feet" rule from a different product can leave you short by half. Read the cubic feet printed on the bag you are actually buying, then run the numbers.

Coverage of one bag at each depth

Coverage per bag is the bag volume × 12 ÷ depth in inches. Nothing else changes it.

What depth should you use?

This calculator does not prescribe a depth, because the right one depends on what the surface is for. Enter the depth you have decided on and the calculator converts it.

One case does have a published figure. If the rubber is going under playground equipment as a safety surface, the CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook treats shredded or recycled rubber differently from other loose-fill materials: its installation tips give 6 inches as the recommended minimum for rubber, and its Table 2 lists 9 inches of shredded/recycled rubber as protecting to a fall height of 10 feet. Rubber mulch by the cubic yard instead of the bag

Bulk rubber is sometimes quoted in cubic yards or in super sacks rather than bags, so it is worth converting. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. The 200 sq ft example above is 33.33 cubic feet, which is 1.23 cubic yards.

To compare a bulk quote against bags, divide the bulk price by 27 to get a price per cubic foot, then divide any bag price by its own cubic feet. That puts both options in the same unit — the dated bulk price check shows the same conversion with real quotes.

Common mistakes with rubber mulch orders

Using a bag count from a different product. A 0.8 cu ft bag and a 1.5 cu ft bag are not interchangeable.
Comparing bag prices without dividing by the bag's cubic feet.
Rounding each section of a bed up separately instead of adding the area first.
Assuming a mulch calculator that asks only for area knows your bag size. It cannot — the bag volume is the missing number.

How many bags of rubber mulch do I need?

Multiply the bed area by the depth in inches and divide by 12 to get cubic feet, then divide by the cubic feet printed on your bag and round up. A 100 sq ft bed at 2 inches is 16.67 cubic feet: 21 bags at 0.8 cu ft, or 12 bags at 1.5 cu ft.

How much does a 0.8 cu ft bag of rubber mulch cover?

4.8 sq ft at a 2-inch layer, 3.2 sq ft at 3 inches, and 9.6 sq ft at 1 inch.

Is rubber mulch sold by the cubic yard?

Sometimes. Bulk rubber is quoted in cubic yards or in super sacks that hold a stated number of cubic feet, so convert everything to cubic feet before comparing. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet.

Does rubber mulch weigh the same as wood mulch?

No, and this page does not estimate weight for rubber. Wood-based mulch is quoted at 450–850 lb per cubic yard depending on material and moisture, and rubber is a denser product, so the same volume is heavier. For anything beyond a few bags, check the bag weight or the bulk quote before arranging delivery.

Can I use this for a playground?
