MEASURE → CALCULATE → CHECK THE QUOTE
How Much Mulch Do I Need?
For one bed measured in square feet, cubic yards needed = area × depth in inches ÷ 324. Enter the measured area and planned depth for an exact volume, then optionally enter a supplier quote to see the depth that quote provides over the same area.
START WITH THE MEASURED AREA
Enter area and depth for an exact cubic-yard result
The formula uses square feet, inches, and cubic yards. A supplier’s ordering increment is separate from the exact calculation.
The direct answer
Measure the area that will actually receive mulch, select the layer depth for the project, then calculate area × depth ÷ 324. The answer is cubic yards. The 324 comes from 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard multiplied by 12 inches in one foot.
Measure before you order
- For a rectangle, multiply length by width to get square feet.
- For a circle, use π × (diameter ÷ 2)².
- Remove any surface that will not receive mulch before calculating volume.
- Keep the area measurement and selected depth with the supplier quote.
For a rectangle with a circular space left bare, use the Mulch Coverage Calculator to find the net area first.
Check a supplier quote instead of guessing
A cubic-yard quote can be translated back into an installed depth over your measured area: depth in inches = quoted cubic yards × 324 ÷ area. The calculator above shows both directions. It separates the math from a seller’s minimum order or delivery increment.
| What you know | Calculation | What it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Area + planned depth | area × depth ÷ 324 | Exact cubic yards needed |
| Area + quoted cubic yards | quoted yards × 324 ÷ area | Depth the quote provides |
| Cubic yards | yards × 27 | Cubic feet in that volume |
Worked quote check
Start with the 120 sq ft, 3-inch measurement example on the measure-to-order worksheet. If a quote lists 1.5 cubic yards for that same 120 sq ft bed, the reverse check is 1.5 × 324 ÷ 120 = 4.05 inches. This reverse calculation reports the depth the quoted volume provides; it does not decide whether to change a supplier’s quoted quantity.
What common quote sizes give you over one bed
Suppliers quote in round or half-yard amounts, so the useful question is what each of those amounts actually covers over the area you measured. For a 120 sq ft bed, depth = quoted yards × 324 ÷ 120:
| Quoted | Depth over 120 sq ft | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cubic yard | 2.70 inches | 1 × 324 ÷ 120 |
| 1.5 cubic yards | 4.05 inches | 1.5 × 324 ÷ 120 |
| 2 cubic yards | 5.40 inches | 2 × 324 ÷ 120 |
| 2.5 cubic yards | 6.75 inches | 2.5 × 324 ÷ 120 |
| 3 cubic yards | 8.10 inches | 3 × 324 ÷ 120 |
Reading the table in both directions is the point. If 3 inches is your target, the exact requirement is 120 × 3 ÷ 324 = 1.11 cubic yards, which sits between the 1-yard and 1.5-yard rows. The table does not decide for you — it tells you that 1 yard leaves you at 2.70 inches and 1.5 yards takes you to 4.05 inches.
Common ordering mistakes
- Calculating from an outside rectangle without subtracting unmulched paths, trunks, or islands.
- Using a depth in inches as though it were feet; the ÷324 shortcut is for square feet, inches, and cubic yards.
- Comparing a cubic-yard quote with bag count without converting units.
- Rounding small sections before adding the total. Add areas or volumes first, then apply a supplier’s ordering rule once.
FAQ
How many bags of mulch do I need?
After you know the required volume, bag count depends on bag capacity. Use How Many Bags of Mulch Do I Need? for the bag conversion.
How much area does one cubic yard cover?
Coverage changes with depth. The one-yard coverage page lists exact square-foot coverage at several depths.
Can I calculate a circular bed?
Yes. The main Mulch Calculator accepts a circle directly. This page focuses on keeping the measured area and bulk quote in one check.
Before you compare a quote, use the measure-to-order mulch worksheet to record the net area, depth, and seller unit.
The same question about a different material: how much compost do I need uses the identical area-and-depth arithmetic.
