How much does a bag of mulch weigh?
A 2 cubic foot bag of organic mulch weighs roughly 33 to 63 pounds. That figure is not printed on most bags, because bags are sold by volume and the weight depends on the material and how wet it is. This page shows where the range comes from and what it means for loading a car, a truck bed, or a delivery.
Where the number comes from
The University of Regina's Math Central publishes the weight of mulch as 450 to 850 pounds per cubic yard. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so that range is 16.7 to 31.5 pounds per cubic foot. Multiply by the volume printed on the bag and you have the bag weight.

The range is wide because 450 and 850 pounds per cubic yard are both real: a dry, coarse bark mulch sits near the bottom, and a wet, fine material sits near the top. Two bags with identical labels can differ by 30 pounds depending on how long they sat outside in the rain.
Weight is not what you should calculate from
The single most common mistake in this area is buying mulch by weight. Mulch is sold by volume — cubic feet on a bag, cubic yards in bulk — and coverage depends on volume and depth, not on pounds. A 40 lb bag and a 50 lb bag can both hold 2 cubic feet, and the heavier one simply contains more water.

What the weight means in practice
- Loading a car. A trunk that comfortably takes eight 2 cu ft bags may be carrying 260 to 500 pounds. Check your vehicle's payload rating rather than guessing, and expect wet bags to sit at the top of the range.
- Bulk delivery. A cubic yard at 450 to 850 pounds is a quarter ton to nearly half a ton of material. If the delivery has to cross a lawn, a driveway edge, or a soft path, that weight is the reason a supplier may ask where the truck can stand.
- Carrying bags to the bed. At 33 to 63 pounds, a 2 cu ft bag is a two-handed carry for most people. Several small trips usually beat stacking them all at once.
- Comparing prices. If one store sells by the bag and another by weight, convert both to price per cubic foot before comparing. The yard price check does that conversion for bulk quotes.
Rubber mulch is a different material
The 450 to 850 pound range describes organic mulch: bark, wood chips, and similar material. Rubber mulch is a different product with its own density, and its bags are sold at different volumes — commonly 0.8, 1.25, 1.5 and 2 cubic feet. Does a wet bag of mulch weigh more?
Yes. Water adds weight without adding volume, which is why the published range spans 450 to 850 pounds per cubic yard and why two identical bags can weigh noticeably differently. This is also why weight is a poor way to estimate how much area a bag will cover.
How much does a yard of mulch weigh?
